Terror-korrespondent berättar om attacken

Minns ni BBC-korrespondenten Frank Gardner? Han är en specialist på Al-Qaida och arbetade som TV-kanalens säkerhets- och terrorismreporter innan han själv utsattes för ett islamistiskt mordförsök i somras.

Attacken inträffade en vecka efter att svensken Magnus Johansson hade halshuggits av terrorister i den saudiska staden Khobar i slutet av maj. Frank Gardner befann sig tillsammans med sin kameraman i ett ökänt islamistfäste i Saudiarabiens huvudstad Riyadh när de anfölls av islamistiska terrorister. Kameramannen mördades, och den erfarne och arabisktalande Gardner beskjöts med sex skott och lämnades att dö. Ingen kom för att hjälpa honom, trots att han ropade på hjälp på arabiska och låtsades vara muslim genom att bära med sig en liten koran:

"I'm a Muslim, help me, I'm a Muslim, help me," the British father of two daughters cried in Arabic, the officer said [...]

A fluent Arabic speaker with a degree in Arab and Islamic Studies, he was carrying a small copy of the Koran, the Muslim holy book, a device used by Westerner reporters to try to reassure Islamist militants.

Men det hjälpte inte. Frank Gardner, som nu är paralyserad och lär sig att gå med proteser, berättar om händelsen:

I looked into the face of the gunman who shot me. I saw in the faces of the gunmen absolute hatred; they had pressed the button of violence and nothing I tried to say to them in Arabic was going to dissuade them. As far as they were concerned I was a heathen, a western infidel who had come into their area and this was an opportunity to execute a westerner [...]

And they wanted blood, they wanted to make a statement by executing us and, as far as they were concerned, they left me for dead. I heard them talking in Arabic as they decided what to do with me, just before they turned and fired three bullets into me.
